What Tendling, this website and a purchase do with your data: almost nothing, and everything the app keeps stays on your Mac.
Last updated 2026-10-03
The short version
- Everything Tendling keeps stays on your Mac, in one file you can export or delete at any time.
- No account, no telemetry, no analytics, no ads.
- The app sends nothing over the network, except the weather on the expedition, which is off unless you switch it on.
- This website sets no cookies and loads nothing from other sites.
- When you buy Tendling, Lemon Squeezy handles the payment. We get your name, email, country and order, so we can help you and keep the books.
Who is responsible
The controller of your personal data is Michal Strnadel, Waltariho 1149/1, 198 00 Praha 9, Czech Republic, Company ID (IČO) 03509851. Write to [email protected] about anything on this page.
The app
What stays on your Mac
Tendling keeps what it needs in one file, state.json, in ~/Library/Application Support/com.michalstrnadel.focuscompanion/, and your preferences in the standard macOS preferences for the app. That is:
- your profiles: their names, rules, and the apps your companion may act in;
- your sessions: intention, tag, length, mode, when they ran, how many nudges, closes and undos, and your answer to “Did it help?”;
- decisions: when a rule matched, the app and the website’s name only (for example
youtube.com), and what your companion did and why; - your companion’s progress and finds;
- your answers to the experimental guesses and the weekly question, only if you use them;
- preferences such as your companion’s name and species, sounds and language.
Settings → Privacy & Data shows the same list. Export… saves all of it as one readable JSON file, and Delete All Data… erases it. None of it is sent to us or anyone else.
What is never collected
- keystrokes;
- screenshots or screen recordings;
- what’s on a web page or in a document;
- full web addresses or page titles.
To decide whether to step in, Tendling looks at the app in front and, with your permission, the front window and the address of the active browser tab. It uses them in the moment and keeps only the app and the website’s name. When no session is running and Always On is off, it observes nothing.
Weather on the expedition (optional)
Off by default. If you switch it on in Settings → Companion → Weather and pick a place:
- the name you search for is sent once to Apple’s place search (Apple Maps), under Apple’s privacy policy;
- about every 30 minutes while Tendling runs, that place’s coordinates, rounded to about 10 km, are sent to the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway), and the forecast comes back. Weather data from MET Norway, CC BY 4.0.
Nothing else goes with them: no account, no identifier, no cookies, nothing about your sessions or apps. Like any website, MET Norway and Apple see your IP address. Tendling keeps only the place’s name and rounded coordinates; switching the weather off or deleting all data forgets them. We use this on the basis of your consent, which you withdraw by switching it off.
Checking for updates
Today, Tendling never checks for updates by itself; a new version is a new download. A Check for Updates command is planned. When it arrives, and only if you use it or switch on automatic checks, Tendling will ask our update server whether a newer version exists. That request carries the app version and macOS version, and, like any request, your IP address.
Diagnostics and bug reports
Tendling has no crash reporting or telemetry of its own. Copy Diagnostics and Report a Bug… in Settings → Diagnostics put a summary on your clipboard or into a new email, and nothing leaves your Mac unless you send it yourself. You can read and edit it first. It contains the app version, permission status, rule counts, and recent decisions with app and website names; no full addresses, file paths or intentions.
This website
- No cookies, no analytics, no tracking, and no requests to other sites. Fonts and images are served from this site.
- Your browser’s local storage remembers which companion you picked (cat, dog or cat-dog), so the page shows it next time. Session storage remembers your sound choice until you close the tab. Both stay in your browser and are never sent to us. You can clear them in your browser’s settings.
- Our hosting provider records technical access logs, such as IP address, time, the page requested and browser type, to keep the site running and secure. They are kept only briefly.
Purchases
Tendling is sold through Lemon Squeezy, which acts as the merchant of record: it is the seller in your purchase, takes the payment, and handles taxes, invoices and refunds. Your payment details go to Lemon Squeezy and its payment processors, never to us, and Lemon Squeezy’s own privacy policy applies to them.
From Lemon Squeezy we receive your name, email address, country, and the order details (what you bought, when, the price and tax). We use them to deliver your purchase, answer your questions, handle refunds, and meet our accounting and tax duties. The legal basis is the contract with you and our legal obligations. We keep order records for as long as accounting and tax law requires, and no longer than we need otherwise. We don’t send marketing email.
Support emails
When you write to us, we keep your message and our reply for as long as we need them to help you, and to recognize a problem if it comes back. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in answering you. Ask us, and we’ll delete them sooner, unless we have to keep something, for example because it concerns a purchase.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to:
- access the personal data we hold about you;
- have it corrected;
- have it erased;
- restrict how we use it;
- receive it in a portable format;
- object to our use of it;
- withdraw your consent at any time, where we rely on it.
Write to [email protected], and we’ll answer within a month. You can also complain to your local data protection authority. Our lead authority is the Czech Office for Personal Data Protection (Úřad pro ochranu osobních údajů, ÚOOÚ).
Remember that the data in the app never reaches us. To see, export or delete it, use Settings → Privacy & Data on your Mac.
Children
Tendling and this website are not aimed at children under 16, and we don’t knowingly collect personal data from them.
Changes
If what Tendling or this site does with data changes, this page changes first, with a new date at the top. Changes in the app also appear in What’s new.
